KZN man gets 18 years for raping girl, 12

Johannesburg - A KwaZulu-Natal man was sentenced by the Vryheid Regional Court to 18 years in jail for raping a 12-year-old girl, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Nkosinathi Nxumalo, 22, was sentenced on Thursday, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

Nxumalo raped the girl, his neighbour, in September last year while she was on the way to a shop. He threatened her to not tell anyone. The girl's mother discovered the crime after she saw the girl was "not walking properly".

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmammonye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence.

"Our FCS [Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences] units in the province of KwaZulu-Natal will continue with their good work and bring those rapist to book," she said.

Ngobeni encouraged women and children to report crimes to the police.
