Farmer's wife bought muti after murder

Bloemfontein - A farmer’s wife who is accused of killing her husband allegedly went to see a sangoma to make the case against her “disappear”.

This was according to the testimony of Velaphi Makhondo, 31, in a Harrismith court, reported Volksblad.

Makhondo said Marie van Wyngaard also approached him and confessed to him about having killed her husband with the help of her co-accused, farmworker Mandla Nkabinde, 36.

He said he came to work on the farm Goedehoop after the murder of Chris van Wyngaard, 43, and testified how the farmer’s wife asked him either to admit guilt to her husband’s murder or get three men who would. She was prepared to pay each R50 000.

“I refused. She then asked me to go and see a sangoma.”

Makhondo accompanied her to Warden where she saw a sangoma who gave her muti to make the case against her disappear.

“I asked her if she would tell the sangoma the truth about her husband’s murder. She told me that she had killed her husband and that Mandla had helped her.”

A police spokesperson testified in court that the Van Wyngaards had already been divorced at the time of the murder.

A policy of over R68 000 was paid to Van Wyngaard after her husband’s death and another of R110 000 still had to be paid out.
