Johannesburg - Many fans of late TV and radio host Vuyo Mbuli who planned to tune in to his funeral on Friday have been left at a loose end as the SABC opted not to air the service live on TV.
The SABC instead streamed the funeral live on their Youtube channel. But many loyal Vuyo fans who do not have access to the devices and uncapped data needed to watch the funeral on Youtube are upset that they have been denied the opportunity.
"Exactly why couldn't @SABC2 show Vuyo Mbuli's memorial and funeral service live? I mean he was one of your own! #SMH," wrote @Leefiery on Twitter.
"They should have broadcasted the #VuyoMbuli 's funeral (sic)," wrote @Andile_Nogabu.
Calls to the SABC for comment went unanswered.
Official provincial funeral
The SABC announced that funeral would also be simulcast during live crossings on national radio station SAFM. The only live TV footage from the funeral was broadcast on Morning Live on Friday from 06:00-08:00.
The funeral, being held at St Johns College in Houghton, Johannesburg only officially started at 09:00.
The Gauteng government and Mbuli's long-time Morning Live colleague Leanne Manas confirmed on Thursday that he would be "buried a hero" and receive an official provincial funeral courtesy of the Gauteng province and Premier Nomvula Mokonyane.
Flags would also be flying at half mast at government buildings in his honour, Manas said.
The funeral is also being attended by friends, family and colleagues of the beloved broadcaster, including SABC CEO Lulama Mokhobo, Morning Live reporter Peter Ndoro, former Miss SA and Top Billing presenter Basetsana Kumalo, Communications Minister Dina Pule, and Defence Minister Jeff Radebe, who would speak at the funeral.
Mbuli will be buried at the West Park Cemetary in Johannesburg after the service on Friday.
Twitter has been flooded with annoyed Mbuli fans, asking the SABC why the funeral was not aired on TV:
